Seminar 2018.2

Locally extremal geodesic loops on Riemannian manifold

Jose Luis Flores Dorado

Universidad de Málaga
Departamento de Algebra, Geometría y Topología
We prove that any locally extremal non-self-conjugate geodesic loop in a Riemannian manifold is a closed geodesic. As a consequence, any complete and non-contractible Riemannian manifold with diverging injectivity radii along diverging sequences and without points conjugate to themselves, possesses a minimizing closed geodesic.

Semilinear Parabolic Equations with Unbounded Attractors

Juliana Fernandes da Silva Pimentel

UFABC
Centro de Matemática Computação e Cognição
We consider non-dissipative semilinear parabolic equations on a bounded interval. We review the recently developed theory for the autonomous version of this class of problems and present a characterization for the associated noncompact global attractor.

The X Journey of Algebra

The Journey of Algebra is an annual event that has as main target audience the graduate and undergraduate students of the South region of the country who develop projects in the area of Algebra in their institutions.

The tenth edition of the conference will be held in Florianópolis, from April 25 to 28, 2018, in the Mathematics Department of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. This event counts on lectures and mini-courses of important researchers in algebra from Brazil and abroad, with oral communications on the original results of new doctors and graduate students, as well as poster presentation of undergraduate and graduate students.

Decay of solutions for a mixture of thermoelastic solids

Francis Felix Cordova Puma

UFSC – Blumenau
We prove for the system modelling a mixture of n thermoelastic materials with different temperatures that strong stability implies exponential stability. That is, we show that the semigroup is exponentially stable if and only if the imaginary axis is contained in the resolvent set of the infinitesimal generator. In particular this implies the lack of polynomial stability to the corresponding semigroup.

Viscoelastic and Thermoelastic effects in beams of Timoshenko type

Marcio Jorge da Silva

UEL
In this talk we are going to discuss on the mathematical modeling as well as some stability results for Timoshenko beams under viscoelastic and thermoelastic effects. We first deal with a viscoelastic model whose dissipation acts on shear force by using linear constitutive laws in viscoelasticity coming from physical point of view. Then, we are going to consider a thermo-viscoelastic model where a thermal law is applied to shear force whereas a viscoelastic law is taken in the bending moment. Some initial stability results shall be presented.
